Liszt, Franz. (1811-1886)

Sammelband of Works Composed or Arranged by Liszt- INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY TO HIS PUPIL NADINE HELBIG

Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel. [1852]. First edition. Sammelband of early and first editions, highlighted by a first edition of the Zwei Kirchen-Hymnen für Harmonium oder Orgel inscribed by the composer to the verso of the printed dedication page opposite the first page of music to his pupil and friend Nadine Helbig (1847-1922), "Madame N. Helbig,- / dévouée amitié / F. Liszt / Janvier, 80 à Roma,"  and additionally inscribed by the composer at the head of the second movement (II. Ave maris stella), recording that he performed it in concert on the 30th of January, 1879 at Villa d'Este, Rome.  Full list of included printed scores as follows, and also including a manuscript copy possibly in the hand of Nadine Helbig on hand-ruled paper, a piano score arrangement of the Berceau movement of Du berceau jusqu'au cercueil (S.512), here titled Du berceau au cercueil.  Front endsheet of volume with two autograph inscriptions in French, one signed George H Ford, and the other in an unknown hand.  Ford writes, translated from the French, "Received as a tribute to Madame Helbig on 24 March, 1919 at the Villa Lanti, Janicule, Rome, after having played Liszt, Chopin, Grieg, and my compositions and improvisations in her presence at the piano gifted to her by the master [Liszt]."  The second inscription describes the same afternoon in effusive terms, mentioning the "Pleyel du Maitre," the "presence of the student he most admired," and following the unidentified signature, adds that he is the "fervent friend and admirer of the Master and his disciple." 4to. Half-vellum with marbled paper boards.  Top portion of spine perished, general wear to cover, scattered foxing throughout, overall in fine condition.  All musical scores printed in lithograph unless otherwise stated.
