Caldwell, Sarah. (1924–2006)

Signed Photograph taken during the 1983 production of Rimsky-Korsakov's "Legend of the Invisible City"

Signed candid photograph of the brilliant American opera conductor with soprano Sarah Reese, taken during the 1983 Opera Company of Boston production of Rimsky-Korsakov's Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the Maiden Fevronia.  Caldwell has neatly inscribed "Best wishes / always to Paul / Sarah Caldwell / Fevronia '83 / OCB" in black ink to the upper left corner.  Wear to lower right corner, else in fine condition.  7 x 5 inches (17.8 x 12.7 cm.).

John Rockwell's New York TImes review of the 1983 production began, "Every season, it seems, Sarah Caldwell and her Opera Company of Boston attempt one exotic blockbuster—a work so unusual, and so seemingly beyond their normally circumspect forces, that one has to wonder at their audacity.  Sometimes, as with last season's fatally flawed distortion of Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Soldaten, they fail.  At other times, as with yesterdays new production, they succeed."
