Sapellnikoff, Wassily. (1867–1941)

Signed Photograph

Exceptionally rare signed halftone photograph (portrait by Hay Whightson) of the great Russian pianist, who has penned his name to a single sheet removed from a 1923 concert program.  Dated "22/1/23" to the lower edge in an unknown hand.  In fine condition.  5.75 x 8.5 inches (14.5 x 21.5 cm.).

Born in Odessa, Sapellnikoff studied at the Odessa Conservatory and taught at the Moscow Conservatory.  He toured with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in Germany, France, and England, making his debut with the Russian composer's Piano Concerto No. 1 in Hamburg in 1888 under Tchaikovsky's baton.  He became a favorite at Philharmonic concerts, and created a furor in 1892 with his performance of Franz Liszt's E-flat Concerto, accepting a second engagement for the same season.  In 1902 he delivered the first performance in England of Sergei Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto.
