Dunes and Sand (Dünen und Strandgräser) - INSCRIBED "with my heartiest Christmas wishes"
Etching with drypoint on paper, signed, dated and inscribed in pencil lower right "To Arnott & Clara with my heartiest Christmas wishes- as ever, George." Framed, with Pazo Fine Art label attached to verso. 11 3/4" x 14" sight, 17 3/4" x 19 7/8" framed. Unexamined out of frame but in apparently fine condition. An unnumbered example outside of the edition of 200. Dückers E 109 II.
The influential German artist George Grosz was known especially for his caricatural drawings and paintings of Berlin life in the 1920s. A prominent member of the Berlin Dada and New Objectivity group during the Weimar Republic, he emigrated to the United States in 1933, and became a naturalized citizen in 1938. Between 1936 and 1945 he spent his summers on Cape Cod and there he spent many hours painting among the sand dunes. Abandoning the style and subject matter of his earlier work, he exhibited regularly and taught for many years at the Art Students League of New York. “In 1935 I spent the first of seven summers in Cape Cod,” he wrote in his autobiography. “That landscape with its beautiful high dunes was the exact inner landscape that I had been carrying with me for so long.
