Large Composite Photograph

Unusual large silver gelatin print by the Czech photographer, composed in photographic montage format with ten various portraits of the great violinist.  The array of images include several of Menuhin playing the violin in front of a curtained window, and more formal studio and profile photographs.  Some light surface creasing, crease to upper right corner and a few spots, else in fine condition. 19.75 x 15.75 inches (50.2 x 40 cm.). Provenance: From the Estate of Richard de Grab.

Throughout his career, postwar contemporary artist and photographer Richard de Grab produced many portraits of renowned artists and musicians whom he often befriended, including Rubinstein, Casals, Cocteau, Picasso, Miro, Prévert, Hartung, Soulage, and Poliakoff. Salvador Dali, another subject and friend to de Grab, affectionately nicknamed him "The Turtle ", with several drawings dedicated to him over the years with inscriptions reading, "Bonjor Tortue", and "Pour la Tortue".
