Loos, Anita. (1889-1981) [Halston, Roy. (1932-1990)]

"Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" - Signed and Inscribed Copy to Halston

New York: Liveright Publishing Corporation. 1963. 8vo.  217 pp.  A later edition of the American writer's celebrated comic novel, signed and inscribed on the front endpaper by the author to the legendary fashion designer, "For my darling Halston – this book that was written before you were born. / Your admiring and devoted / Anita Loos / May 1 - 1963".  Hardcover with original dust jacket.  Moderate wear to jacket, slight toning and moderate rubbing to binding edges, else in fine condition.  An interesting association copy.

This delirious 1925 Jazz Age classic introduced readers to Lorelei Lee, the small-town girl from Little Rock, who has become one of the most timeless characters in American fiction. Outrageous and charming, this not-so-dumb blonde has been portrayed on stage and screen by Carol Channing and Marilyn Monroe and has become the archetype of the footloose, good-hearted gold digger (not that she sees herself that way). Masquerading as her diaries, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes follows Lorelei as she entertains suitors across Europe before returning home to marry a millionaire. In this delightfully droll and witty book, which no less an authority than Edith Wharton called the "Great American Novel," Lorelei’s glamorous pragmatism shines, as does Anita Loos’s mastery of irony and dialect.

Roy Halston Frowick, known mononymously as Halston, was an American fashion designer who rose to international fame in the 1970s. His minimalist, clean designs, often made of cashmere or ultrasuede, were a new phenomenon in the mid-1970s discotheques and redefined American fashion. (20477)
