Lithograph caricature by the French journalist/photographer/caricaturist depicting Alphonse Sax, brother of Adolphe (Belgian inventor of the Saxophone), who had himself patented the saxaphomnitonique system of brass instruments and was an important instrument manufacturer. Depicted in costume as a young Sylphide, the image is from around the beginning of Sax's efforts to demonstrate not only that women were capable of playing brass instruments, but that it was in their interests — on moral, health and potentially even career grounds — to do so. The caption beneath the illustration reads, translated from the French, "Alphonse Sax (Junior) metamorphoses into Sylphide to better convert the fairer sex to the holy principles of morality and brass instruments!"
