Autograph Letter Signed

ALS from one of the most influential pianists of the 19th century to a woman identified only as "Sophie," likely her close friend Sophie Kaskel, Countess von Baudissin. In German. Berlin, December 8, 1878. 4 pp. Bifolium. The letter, written in Schumann's characteristically inscrutable handwriting, expresses her frustration about a delayed shipment of furniture:  "I am still sitting without a table or chairs... If he indeed shipped them in early October as promised, he has to file a complaint with the railroad company... I do not understand why the dealer hasn't delivered them on time." Schumann hopes for a meeting with the recipient around February 23, [1879]. 4.25 x 5.25 inches (10.8 x 13.3 cm).

The German pianist and composer Clara Schumann, née Wieck, was wife of Robert Schumann and famous muse of Johannes Brahms. Sophie Kaskel and Clara Wieck met sometime between 1830 and 1834, likely at a gathering hosted by either Kaskel's parents or Count Baudissin, her future husband.  During a private performance, the two played pieces for four hands together.  According to Clara's diaries, Kaskel was “delighted” by her playing, and Clara in turn praised her as a “proficient dilettante.” Clara Wieck dedicated Quatre pièces caractéristiques, Op. 5, to her friend, and Sophie became the godmother of Ludwig Schumann, born in 1848.
