[Duncan, Isadora. (1877–1927)] Genthe, Arnold (1869–1942)

"Isadora Duncan: Twenty Four Studies" - Inscribed by the Photographer to the Coffee House Club

New York & London: Mitchell Kennerley. 1929. First. 4to. Hardcover, black cloth with gilt lettering and vignette. 14 pages, plus 24 leaves printed recto only, comprising twenty-four full-page plates by Genthe, photographic studies made during Isadora Duncans 1915-1918 visit to America at the height of her career.  Inscribed by the photographer on the front free endpage "For the Coffee House Club / with greetings from / Arnold Genthe / New York 1929."  Corners bumped, scattered toning, some restoration evident to spine, overall in very good condition.

Arnold Genthe was a pioneer of dance photography, producing The Book of Dance in 1916 and Isadora Duncan: Twenty Four Studies in 1929.  It was his photographs of Duncan which persuaded Dorothea Lang to come and study with him.

The Coffee House Club is a New York-based private social club founded in 1915 by Frank Crowninshield and Rawlins L. Cottenet.  The pair had been members of the hyper-exclusive Knickerbockers Club for some time when, according to a speech given by Ben Hall at the CHC's Golden Anniversary dinner, they decided they were "fed up to the tops of the Arrow collars with the Knickerbocker and its brass-buttoned flunkies, silver duck-presses, and gold-plated table conversation."
