Uncommon signed photograph of the one-legged dancer, who has inscribed: "To Bill Spears- / My sincere wishes to you. Montreal / is filled with / nice people like / you. / Peg Leg Bates." Toning and water damage, with small tears and surface losses to the upper corners, else good. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).

Clayton "Peg Leg" Bates was a popular dancer and vaudeville performer in the 1930s and 1940s despite the loss of one leg in childhood. He then became the first African-American resort owner in the Catskills "Borscht Belt" circuit. (19852)
