Rostropovich, Mstislav. (1927–2007) [Prokofiev, Sergei. (1891–1953)]

1957 Royal Festival Hall Concert Program

Concert program from a performance with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Royal Festival Hall on Thursday, April 18th 1957.  The performance, under the baton of Malcolm Sargent, included works by Berlioz, Tchaikovsky, and featured Rostropovich as soloist for Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante for Cello and Orchestra, a work the legendary Russian cellist had premiered five years earlier.  A photograph of Rostropovich and Prokofiev at the piano can be found on page 2 of the present program.  8 pp.  Horizontal crease, spotting around staples, else in fine condition.  7.25 x 9.75 inches (18 x 24.5 cm.).

While Prokofiev's Cello Concerto, Op. 58 had been poorly received at its 1938 premiere, the composer decided to revisit the piece after hearing a 20-year old Rostropovich perform it at the Moscow Conservatory in 1947.  The end result of these revisions, the Symphony-Concerto, Op. 125, was dedicated to the young cellist, who premiered it in February of 1952 with Sviatoslav Richter conducting.
