"Allegory of Music" – 16th Century Engraving
16th century German Copper engraving on paper, titled "MVSICA" at the head, from a series of seven engravings on the liberal arts, each with the female personification floating full-figure in the midst of clouds and surrounded by her attributes. Lower middle monogramed "VS." Mild toning, with some creases and small tear to the lower left margin. Trimmed just along the platemark; overall in fine condition. 2.3 x 3.3 inches (5.8 x 8.3 cm.).A member of a prolific family of artists, Virgilius Solis was a German draughtsman and printmaker in engraving, etching and woodcut who worked in his native city of Nuremberg. His prints were sold separately (mainly the etchings and engravings) or formed the illustrations of books (normally the woodcuts); many prints signed by him are probably by assistants. After his death his widow married his assistant and continued the workshop into the early seventeenth century. (19739)
