Elliott Carter's career spanned over 75 years, with compositions ranging from chamber music to orchestral works to opera. He twice won the Pulitzer Prize, and was the first composer to receive the United States National Medal of Arts. Oliver Knussen was likewise a towering figure in contemporary music, as composer and conductor, teacher and artistic director.
