Signed Portrait to the Lighting Designer at the Palace Theatre

Signed photograph of an H. Schumann portrait drawing of the famous American pianist and vocalist, who has inscribed to David Bines, the longtime lighting designer at the Palace Theatre.  Liberace has signed and inscribed in characteristically bold fashion using a black felt tip marker.  "To David Bines, a Great Showman! / The knowledge you possess of the theater would fill many volumes. I am grateful for your tremendous help! / Liberace / Oct. 1957."  Beneath his signature, Liberace has included an illustration of his trademark candelabra atop a grand piano.  Light wear to edges, half-inch tear to right edge, else in fine condition.  8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.).

David Bines worked for 22 years as production manager for RKO Theaters, principally at the flagship Palace in New York City.  Prior to that, he found work staging dance numbers at New Haven’s Paramount, Boston’s Keith, Providence’s Fay’s, and Hartford’s State theaters.  The great headliners of the day appeared at the Palace, and Bines guided Lauritz Melchior, Betty Hutton, Alan King, Jerry Lewis, Liberace and Harry Belafonte through their appearances there.  His greatest triumph came in the early 1950s when Judy Garland gave one show-stopping performance after another.  Bines also worked with Danny Kaye for ten years, handling the production and especially the lighting of Kaye’s highly original and successful shows.
