"A Guaranteed Gay Product" – 1950s Pencil Display
1950s vintage 6-pencil display manufactured by Gay Products Company, with text reading: "5¢ / GENUINE GAY PRODUCT / PENCILS / A GUARANTEED GAY PRODUCT / GAY PRODUCTS COMPANY • ATLANTA." Moderate toning throughout, with some wear to the corners, but in otherwise fine condition. 11 x 9.25 inches.Out of business since the 1960s, the Georgia-based company packaged a variety of countertop products – combs, toothbrushes, hair pins, fishing line, pencils, and key chains among other items – in bold cardboard displays for dime markets, grocery stores and pharmacies. The company slogan underwent variations on the product packaging between the 1940s-50s, the most notable being: "If it's Gay...It's okay." (19419)
