Duprez, Gilbert. (1806–1896)

Autograph letter to Louis-Henri Obin

Autograph letter of the French tenor and composer to French bass Louis-Henri Obin. 2 pp.; bifolium with embossed monogram. Paris, 4 March 1868, signed "G. Duprez". In French. He asks Obin to perform a musical composition of his, apparently two excerpts from the opera Jeanne d'Arc. Usual folds, partly detached; otherwise in fine condition.

After first successes in Italy, Gilbert Duprez had a brilliant but short career as First Tenor at the Paris Opera from 1837 to 1847, when he had to resign because his voice had worn out prematurely. He created the role of Benvenuto Cellini in Berlioz's opera of the same name and took part in the premieres of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor and La favorita. His own opera Jeanne d'Arc, one of quite a few, was staged in Paris in 1865 without success. Louis-Henri Obin (1820–1895) was employed at the Paris Opera for many years and participated in a large number of first performances, La favorita among them. (19395)
