Highly intriguing ALS from the American painter regarding some of the "greatest satisfaction[s]" of his career. May 31, 1961. 1 pp. on blank paper. In part, "As to what I consider the greatest satisfaction of my career— there are several. Among them being— the first time I sold a painting; 1938— A Rosenwald Fellowship grant in 1941— And my association with the Downtown Gallery (1941–53), where I came in contact with many of the countries [sic.] most outstanding artists." Together with a small color image of one of his paintings. In fine condition. 8.5 x 11 inches (21.5 x 28 cm.).Uncommon.Jacob Lawrence was an American painter known for his portrayal of African-American historical subjects and contemporary life. Lawrence referred to his style as "dynamic cubism," though by his own account the primary influences were the shapes and colors of Harlem rather than French art. He brought the African-American experience to life using blacks and browns juxtaposed against vivid colors. He also taught, spending 16 years as a professor at the University of Washington. (19333)
