"Homage à Béla Bartók" - Heavily Annotated and Edited Score from the Collection of Pierre Monteux

MS Facsimile score signed thrice by the Hungarian violist and composer, with autograph MS signed title page ("Homage à Béla Bartók: Lament (Lento and Fugata) for String Orchestra by Tibor Serly.  Duration 8 Minutes"), additional signature and autograph title to head of the work, and final signature near the final measure of the piece, "Tibor Serly / 1955 / 10 W. 580 St. / N.Y.C. 19 / N.Y.," extensively edited with autograph corrections and annotations throughout in blue ink and red pencil in the hand of the composer.  20 pp.  Light water damage to lower blank margin throughout, ink stains to lower front cover, blocks of toning to front and rear covers, else fine.  8.5 x 11 inches (21.6 x 27.9 cm.).

Born in Hungary, Tibor Serly spent most of his childhood in New York City, playing violin and viola in various pit orchestras led by his father.  He studied composition, violin, and orchestration at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, and apprenticed with Béla Bartók, playing a significant role in the preparation of Bartók's Viola Concerto.

The great conductor Pierre Monteux was known for conducting the premiere of the Rite of Spring and for his tenures with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, and the San Francisco Symphony.  (19243)
