"The Leonard Bernstein opera A Quiet Place has not had an easy first year.  Its troubled premiere 13 months ago in Houston took the form of a double bill - the new piece as a gloomy sequel to Trouble in Tahiti, a briefer, brighter opera that Mr. Bernstein wrote in 1951.  Almost everyone, including Mr. Bernstein and his librettist-director, Stephen Wadsworth, agreed that the new work had problems.  It was withdrawn and, with the help of John Mauceri, one opera was made out of the two.  This composite version, now known as A Quiet Place and Trouble in Tahiti, made its debut at La Scala in Milan a month ago, and Sunday night it opened for a week of performances at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts here." (Bernard Holland, "Opera: 'A Quiet Place' by Bernstein, in Washington," The New York Times, July 24, 1984.) (19176)
