An interesting and Eclectic Collection of Autographs

Eclectic grouping of autograph signatures, signed photographs, and autograph and typed letters signed, ca. 1850–1990, concerning California and the westward expansion of the United States.

Autograph signature from John T. Dillon (1876–1937), a silent era actor who appeared in nearly 140 films between 1908 and 1936.  Clipped from an unknown source and affixed to a piece of album leaf. 1.75 x 3.5 inches (4.5 x 9.5 cm.).

ALS from U.S. Senator Eugene Casserly (1820–1883).  January 30, 1873,  2 pp., bifolium stationary separated at spine.  Casserly disparages the "bogus news" that appeared in The Alta newspaper, and complains about the Railroad Company "owning the supervisors" [who] pass "any vile ordinances if wanted." Two vertical fold marks, else fine.  5 x 7.75 inches (12.7 x 19.7 cm.).


Unsigned and unattributed manuscript about the writer's acquaintance with Isaac Pitman (1813–1897), the inventor of shorthand.  4 pp., bifolium paper. Fine condition.  5 x 7.75 inches (12.7 x 19.7 cm.).


ALS by author Ezra Meeker (1830–1928).  1922.  Together with accompanying booklet advertising his books. Some tears, else fine. 8.5 x 11 inches (21.5 x 28 cm.).

ALS from J. T. Evans regarding the application of George W. Chamberlain to fill a vacancy on the California Supreme Court.  January 5, 1892. Fine condition. 5 x 8 inches (12.5 x 20 cm.).


Signed color photograph of astronaut Bruce McCandless (1937–2017).  8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.4 cm.). Fine condition.


Original signed California driver's license issued to author William Saroyan (1908–1981), along with a smaller photostatic copy of a license issued to him. Fine condition. 4 x 5 inches (10 x 12.5 cm.).


Autograph letter written by H. Everett to his wife & children in Cleveland, discussing his trip to Milwaukee taking various means of transportation.  February 27, 1853; Janesville, Wisconsin.  Bifolium writing paper. Accompanied by a modern typed version of the letter for legibility. Some tears, else fine.  8 x 9.75 inches (20.3 x 24.8 cm.).
