Xalon, J. (? - ?)

"Six sonates pour le clavecin et le piano forte Avec accompagnement de Violon ad Libitum dédiées à Madame Bouffé...Oeuvre V"

London : Printed for the Author. [ca. 1786]. Oblong folio. 36 pp.  Engraved throughout.  Composer's autograph paraph to lower right corner.  Disbound from a larger volume, ownership signature "Miss Stowe" to upper margin, remnants of leather binding to spine, a couple of markings in 18th century ink, else in very fine condition throughout.  13 x 9.25 inches (33 x 23.5 cm.).

A curious volume of keyboard works by a London composer and music publisher about whom we have been unable to trace virtually any reliable information. At the very least, the copper title engraving plate used appears to have been pirated from a Parisian publication; it is conceivable the music itself is likewise not by the apparent author. The publisher is here listed as the composer in London ("London Printed for the Author and to be had the Music Shops") and the title is signed by him in ink lower right. However, just above, a canceled other publisher address remains partly visible, as well as the fully visible "A PARIS," fitting more squarely indeed with the title and dedication, fully in French.  Worldcat includes two entries for the composer's first Opus, another collection of sonatas, published by Bailleux in Paris ca. 1786, both held by the BnF.     (19025)
