Signed Maurice Seymour of Chicago photograph of the legendary dancer and choreographer in Rodeo, a collaboration with Aaron Copland. She has inscribed "For George Gaber/ warmest good wishes/ Agnes George de Mille." Dated by the recipient "12/59 / Bell Telephone" in margin to lower right corner. Small creases to lower right corner, else fine. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25 cm.).Copland's influential and popular ballet score written in 1942, originally scored for string orchestra but later modified for full symphony orchestra, included four episodes: Buckaroo Holiday, Corral Nocturne, Saturday Night Waltz and Hoe-Down. The original ballet was choreographed by Agnes de Mille for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and De Mille herself danced the lead in the premiere at the Metropolitan Opera House on October 16,1942 - she apparently received more than 20 curtain calls!
From the collection of George Gaber (1916–2007), noted percussionist who performed with a number of professional ensembles, including the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Baltimore Symphony and worked with Leonard Bernstein, Otto Klemperer, Igor Stravinsky, Henry Mancini, Duke Ellington and many others over the span of his career. From 1960 to 1986 taught percussion at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and was also an artist in residence at Carnegie Mellon University, an adjudicator for National Music Arts in Japan and the Canadian Music Competition, and a Hall of Fame recipient in Percussion Arts Society.
