Cobb, Arnett. (1918–1989)

Signed Postcard Photograph

Signed postcard photograph of the "Wild Man of the Tenor Sax" playing his instrument, signature to verso and dated 7-27-55.  Light edgewear, small creases to upper left corner, else fine, 3.5 x 5.5 inches (8.9 x 14 cm.). Uncommon.

Born in Houston, Cobb took up the tenor saxophone in high school, playing professional gigs in Houston and throughout Louisiana during summer vacation.  In 1939 Cobb turned down an offer to join Count Basie's band, but in 1942 he began a five-year tenure with Lionel Hampton.  He became known as the "Wild Man of the Tenor Sax" for how he would stomp in performance.
