Striking linen-backed poster for the Florentine music festival, illustrated with a musical clef transposed over an image of a brown tower against a background of green and blue. Lettering in red on blue frames the image from above and to the right.  Printed facsimile inscription to lower right, poster printed by L. Salomone, Rome.  Some light surface creases, else in fine condition.  27 x 39.5 inches (68.6 x 100.3 cm.).

The Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (Florence Musical May) is an annual Italian arts festival in Florence, including a notable opera festival, under the auspices of the Opera di Firenze. The festival occurs between late April and June annually, typically with four operas. In April 1933, Vittorio Gui founded what would be the first music festival in Italy with the aim of presenting contemporary and forgotten operas in visually dramatic productions. The first opera presented was Verdi's early Nabucco, his early operas then being rarely staged. The festival's success, which included two performances of Spontini's La Vestale with Rosa Ponselle, led to it becoming a biennial event in 1937 with the presentation of nine operas. After 1937, it became an annual festival, except during World War II. (18896)
