Turrell, James. (b. 1943)

Signed Flyer for a Lecture, ca. 1980

Uncommon early signed flyer for a slide lecture given by the American artist most closely associated with the Light and Space Movement, advertising a talk he would give at the University of Arizona Museum of Art on Tuesday, September 16 at 7:30 pm.  The year is unlisted, ca. 1980.  Turrell has signed "To Louis/ James Turrell" above a photograph of the artist that includes the quotation "My palette is your eyes and ears.  My media is not earth or paint, as much as it is our sensate world..."  Toning and uneven trimming to upper edge, mounting remnants to lower edge and verso, surface tear just below photograph, horizontal scrape along lower portion of image, else fine.  8.5 x 11 inches (21.6 x 29 cm.).

Named a Macarthur Fellow in 1984, Turrell is perhaps best known for his installation project Roden Crater, an ongoing effort to turn a volcanic crater in the desert of Arizona into an outdoor naked-eye observatory. (18853)
