[Can-Can] ["Polaire." Émilie Marie Bouchaud (1874–1939)]

La Danseuse "Polaire" - Animated Engraving

Unusual animated hand-colored engraving of the French singer and actress Polaire, who appears to lift the skirt of her dress when the tab to verso is pulled gently downward.  Some creases along right edge that do not interfere with the image, otherwise in remarkable condition.  6.5 x 8.75 inches (16.5 x 22.2 cm.).

Polaire, born Émilie Marie Bouchaud, was a popular French performer at the turn of the 20th Century.  Her career encompassed music hall, stage, and film, with her greatest success coming between 1890 and the start of World War I.  Famed for her small double-corseted waist, whose reputation may have been an early product of photographic retouching, Polaire was the subject of the Toulouse-Lautrec illustration "Polaire." (18811)
