1889 Berlin Philharmonic Program
Single-sheet Berlin Philharmonic program dated 4 February 1889, under the direction of Bülow in only his second season as conductor of the young orchestra. The evening's program included Joachim Raff's cello concerto in D minor with Becker, the important German cellist, as the featured soloist, along with performances of the Serenade for large orchestra in D major from Brahms, the Overture for Le Roi d'Ys by Edouard Lalo, and Mozart's Symphony No. 40 in G minor. Text along the top and sides informs patrons that while this program is free, they can purchase a booklet for 30 pfeniges. Wear and light tearing to top and right edges, else fine. 5.5 x 8.75 inches (14 x 22.25 cm.).
In 1887, five years after the 1882 formation of the BPO, Bülow took over the post of conductor for the Berlin Philharmonic. It was under his leadership until 1893 that the orchestra began to establish a formidable international reputation.
