Hand holding Bottle - 'End of Day' Black Glass Whimsy, ca. 1910
Black glass sculpture of a hand holding a bottle ca. 1910–1920, mounted on a custom base. Grains of sand are embedded in the surface, remnants of the casting process. Very fine, 11.5 inches tall (29.2 cm.).A really striking so-called "End of Day" piece, a designation referring to when artisan glass manufacturers used extra glass or pieces left over from more industrial pursuits to create their own, more personal, sometimes odd or whimsical pieces, sometimes also referred to as "Whimsies." The present bottle shape is most likely meant to evoke that of a beer bottle, but is interestingly also reminiscent of the classic Coca Cola bottle, introduced in 1915. (18763)
