[Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde] Geiringer, Karl. (1899–1989)

Typed Letter Signed

TLS from the important and influential musicologist responding to a letter from Roger Derby.  April 3, 1961.  1 pp., on University of California, Santa Barbara stationary.  Mr. Derby has inquired after the state of the collection of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (GdM), an important music archive in Vienna where Geiringer had been curator from 1930 until 1938, when the GdM was shutdown by the Nazi government.

"To the best of my knowledge, the collections of the GdM have no suffered from war or post-war conditions.  However, the collection of musical instruments was transferred to the Neue Hofburg and united with the State collection.  It forms now a most impressive museum of musical instruments headed by Dr. Luithlen [Viktor Luithlen, a colleague of Geiringer's at the GdM before the war].  Dr. Kraus stayed on in the Musikverein as director of the collections [Dr. Hedwig Kraus would serve in that position until 1962] and has a tremendous amount of work on her hands as she has hardly any help."
