"Phalenes" - Autograph Musical Quotation Signed with Photograph

Signed card from the French composer and pedagogue, featuring an AMQS in G-flat major marked fuggevole [fleeting] from Philipp's own composition "Phalenes" inscribed "pour M. Roger Derby/ 1932/ I. Philipp," together with with a half-tone photograph clipped from an unidentified publication and together with the original stamped transmissal envelope.  Fine.  Card measures 3.25 x 2.25 inches (8.2 x 5.7 cm.), photograph 9 x 6.75 (22.9 x 17.1 cm.).

Isidor Edmond Philipp was born in Budapest and died in Paris. He studied at the Conservatoire de Paris with Georges Mathias and Camille Saint-Saëns, where he became a lifelong friend of his classmate Claude Debussy. After a successful concert career, he became known primarily as a pedagogue, teaching many important pianists of the next generation. He was close friends with many of the leading pianists and composers of his day, including Leopold Godowsky, Ferruccio Busoni, Alfred Cortot, Béla Bartók, Nadia Boulanger, and Jules Massenet. Interestingly, the tempo indications are different in both original published editions of "Phalenes," neither of them including the marking "fuggevole" seen here.  (18716)
