Autograph Signature

Signed card from the English cellist mounted to album paper with three half-tone photographs clipped from unidentified publications.  Fine.  Card measures 3.25 x 2.25 inch (8.2 x 5.7 cm.), paper 7.75 x 9 inches (19.7 x 22.9 cm.).

Salmond was chosen by Edward Elgar to play the solo part in the composer's Cello Concerto in E minor.  The debut of the piece was famously a disaster, with Elgar and the orchestra receiving little time to rehearse, and the composer later said that the only reason he didn't pull the piece from the program was because of Salmond's meticulous preparations.  Salmond moved to the United States in 1922, joining the faculty at Juilliard in 1924 and becoming head of the cello faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music.
