Roosevelt, Franklin D. (1882–1945) [Heifetz, Jascha. (1901–1987)]

Signed Photograph - Dedicated to Heifetz!

A wonderful signed black and white photograph of FDR seated at his desk, right profile, fountain pen in hand with a scattering of papers on the desk in front of him. FDR inscribes the photograph in the lower margin to the great violinist Jascha Heifetz at bottom blank margin: "For Jascha Heifetz with my regards/ Franklin D. Roosevelt."  With copyright of Harris & Ewing in lower left corner. The photograph is framed to the overall size of 12.75 x 11.5 inches (32.4 x 29.2 cm.); a small plaque on the frame reads, "This wood was part of the White House roof erected about 1817 and removed in 1927." At the lower right corner is affixed a metal presidential seal.

Heifetz performed at the FDR White House in 1934, having also performed there for President and Mrs. Hoover 4 years prior. The Hoovers had continued the tradition, which began during the Theodore Roosevelt administration, of sponsoring concerts or “musicales” at the White House, usually following important dinners or receptions, but it was they who started a new tradition that continues to this day – hosting a musicale for a visiting head of state.  (18672)
