Karajan, Herbert von. (1908–1989)

Early Original Photograph as Generalmusikdirektor der Stadt Aachen

Original gelatin silver print of the important conductor from early in his career, with a printed caption on the verso identifying him as the "Generalmusikdirektor der Stadt Aachen" (General Music Director of the City of Aachen).  The photograph has been signed by the photographer in pencil lower right of the mount ("Foto Prim"?). 7 x 9.5 inches (18 x 24cm), laid down within the photographer's folder-mount to 11.5 X 15.75 inches (29 x 40 cm) overall. Light silvering to the photograph, mount worn and with some stains and creases and cracks, overall very good.

Karajan made his conducting debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1933 and the following year led the Vienna Philharmonic there for the first time. From 1934 to 1941, he was engaged to conduct operatic and symphony-orchestra concerts at the Theater Aachen, where he became Germany's youngest Generalmusikdirektor when he was officially appointed in 1935.
