"I am convalescing and getting better" - Autograph Letter Signed

ALS by the prominent French biographer, novelist, and essayist to Professor Irma Antonetto who he charmingly refers to as "Antoinette".  Dated 6 January with no indication of the year, but evidently concerning an invitation to speak in front of the Associazione Culturele Italiana. 1 pp., on Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo stationary.  Translated from the French: "Your letter (dated to 19 December) reached me this morning, on account of the strike.  Sorry for the delay – involuntary, and thank you for your wishes and those of Conte Lamerana. Please accept mine.  I am in convalescence and getting better. I think that I should be able to come on April 9, 10, 12, and 13.  Naturally it is necessary, more than ever, to limit visits.  This is the only conference I will attend this year, and despite my doctor's protestations.  So protect me.  I don't think my wife will be able to come with me at that time.  She always spends Easter in Périgord.  A thousand pleasantries."  Mailing folds, else fine, 5.25 x 8.25 inches (13.3 x 21 cm.).

Irma Antonetto (1920-1993), was founder and director of the Associazione Culturale Italiana [Association of Italian Culture] for 46 years, during which time she brought some 400 philosophers, writers, scientists, artists, and Nobel winners to lecture in Italy.
