Interesting early photographic reproduction, enhanced and colored in ink and gouache, of a portrait of the French composer in his National Guard uniform, apparently the original drawing by composer Gabriel Faure and subsequently reproduced photographically and enhanced by a childhood friend. Identified lower right in ink (translated from the French) "Copy made by Mr. Edouard Thosel/ childhood friend of St. Saëns (1912)," and lower right "Camille Saint-Saëns/ in the national guard/ 1870/ copy of a sketch/ by Gabriel Fauré." Paper mounted to backing board. Chipping to board corners, else fine. 7.25 x 9.5 inches (18.5 x 24 cm). Highly unusual! (18375)
