[Jazz in France] [Miller, Glenn. (1904–1944)] & Delaunay, Charles. (1911–1988)

Concert Program inscribed by Delaunay to Michel de Bry

Graphically attractive program for a concert by the Glenn Miller Orchestra performed on 18 February, 1945, only two months after the bandleader's tragic death, including a lengthy essay on the history of jazz and a shorter essay specifically on the Glenn Miller Orchestra, both by French author and music critic Charles Delaunay, co-founder and long-term leader of the Hot Club de France, who has inscribed the inside cover: "To Michel de Bry/ as a mark of growing feeling and friendship/ Charles Delaunay." 10 pp., including inset attractive 3-color woodcut illustrations, 6.25 x 9.75 inches (16 x 25 cm.), mild wear, a little soiled, else fine. Together with two newspaper clippings of Parisian and French radio schedules.

Son of painters Robert Delaunay and Sonia Delaunay, Charles Delaunay was one of the founders of the Hot Club de France. Together with Hugues Panassié he initiated the Quintette du Hot Club de France with Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.  During World War II Delaunay was a member of the Resistance, but continued leading the Hot Club. In 1948 Delaunay founded the record label Disques Vogue and was the author of the famous Hot Discography, the first jazz discography.

With the legendary jazz impresario Hugues Panassié, Parisian art dealer and collector Michel de Bry organized the 1948 Festival International du Jazz in Nice. (18356)
