Uncommon original James Kriegsman photograph of the one-legged dancer in top hat and tails, signed and inscribed: "For Tommy/ Each show that I have worked with you has been a grand pleasure. Keep your mouth open – you dig?/ Your pal/ Peg-Leg Bates/ April 1939." 8 x 10 inches. Surface creasing, tape remnants to all corners, small stain to upper edge, mounting remnants to verso.Clayton "Peg Leg" Bates was a popular dancer and vaudeville performer in the 1930s and 1940s despite the loss of one leg in childhood. He then became the first African-American resort owner in the Catskills "Borscht Belt" circuit. (18354)
