Pavlova, Anna. (1881–1931) & Kikugoro VI, Onoe. (1885–1949)

Three Original Photographs in Japan

Three original photographs, ca. 1922–3, of the great ballerina in Japan with the Kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorō VI. She is shown participating in a tea ceremony with Kikugoro, visiting him in his dressing room, and standing with him and his wife and children. Each stamped on the verso by manager Sol Hurok and with typewritten captions to the verso. Some light toning, but overall very fine.

Anna Pavlova used her 1922–1923 tour of Asia to research Eastern styles of dance and to meet with leading dancers, actors, and musicians around Asia. She used these resources to create 1923's "Oriental Impressions," a ballet of divertissements in Japanese and Indian styles.  (18173)
