Pavlova, Anna. (1881–1931) & Shankar, Uday. (1900–1977)

Three Original Photographs in "Oriental Impressions"

Three original photographs of the great ballerina together with Indian dancer Uday Shankar in their ballet "Oriental Impressions," ca. 1923. Stamped on the verso and blind-stamped at the lower corner by Stephenson Studio of Atlanta, and with typewritten captions to the verso. Some light soiling and edge wear; one with some small edge losses; overall very good. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.3 cm).

Anna Pavlova used her 1922–1923 tour of Asia to research Eastern styles of dance and to meet with leading dancers, actors, and musicians around Asia. She used these resources to create 1923's "Oriental Impressions," a ballet of divertissements in Japanese and Indian styles. These included the ballet pictured here, "Radha-Krishna," a duet with Indian dancer Uday Shankar (or Shangar.) "Oriental Impressions" was presented at the Royal Opera House as well as the Metropolitan Opera House. (18167)
