Musical Commonplace Book, 1830's England

An interesting autograph commonplace book containing hand-copied texts, drawings, newspaper clippings, and other materials related to music, with a carte de visite photograph of Giacomo Meyerbeer. Ownership signature of John Bishop to the front free endpaper, dated September 23, 1833. 74 pp. of contents, with some blank pages at the end of the volume; contemporary red leather boards. Wear to spine; gutter split; overall very good. 4.25 x 7 inches (11 x 18 cm).

Contents include short texts on "Velocity of Sound," "Musical Vibrations," "The Abbé Vogler's Tonomètre," the "Origin and Introduction of the Violin" (by Paul Gemsege); texts in Italian on the "Tromba di Zucca" (squash trumpet!) and "Tromba Marina," "Tuba Cochleato," "Tubo di Alesandro Magno," and "Tubo Timpanite," with drawings of each, based on Bonnani's Harmonic Cabinet of 1723; extracts from William Tansur's 1772 book "The Elements of Musick display'd," including a fingering chart for the pipe and four lines of music played by the Roman Pifferari at Christmas; various newspaper clippings from the 1850's including one image of instruments; and a carte de visite photograph of Giacomo Meyerbeer, together with an 1864 clipped obituary.
