Schillings, Max von. (1868–1933)

Das Hexenlied - Autograph Musical Quotation Signed

Autograph musical quotation from the German composer and conductor's 1902 melodrama Das Hexenlied ("The Witch-Song.") He has penned two measures of music, with the spoken words above: "Du kannst noch weinen—du weinst um mich," signed at the foot and dated Stuttgart, September 1916. Rather toned around the edges but otherwise fine. 9 x 5.75 inches (23 x 14.6 cm).

Schillings' compositional work includes several operas, melodramas, choral works, chamber music pieces, violin and piano concertos, symphonic poems and works for stage. His most important work is undoubtedly his opera Mona Lisa, which became one of the most-performed operas in Germany until his death. With Engelbert Humperdinck and Richard Strauss, he was one of the composers who re-established the music form of melodrama at the start of the 20th century.  (18136)
