Original Photograph

Original photograph, ca. 1940's, of the pianist leaning her chin on her hand. Penned on the verso in Italian: "Tempi passati..." This image used on the cover of the Nimbus Records "The Art of Youra Guller: A Legendary Pianist."  Fine. 5 x 6.75 inches (12.7 x 17 cm).

Born in Marseille as Rose-Georgette Guller, of Russian-Romanian heritage, Guller began her studies at the age of five enrolled at the Paris Conservatory at the age of nine, where she worked with Isidor Philipp. In the 1930s, on the occasion of a concert tour planned for just 10 days, she stayed in China for eight years, returning to France on the verge of the Second World War and the invasion of German troops. As a Jew, she was forced to restrict her activities and to hide. After the war in the 1950s this prominent pianist performed only occasionally due to illness, making her New York debut in 1971.

From the collection of Georgian-Russian pianist Nikita Magaloff and his wife Irene, the daughter of violinist Joseph Szigeti. Magaloff, born to a noble Georgian family in St. Petersburg, was influenced by family friend Serge Prokofiev and studied with Siloti and Isidor Philipp. Among the friends he made studying at the Paris Conservatory was Maurice Ravel, who considered him "a great, a truly extraordinary musician." He was especially known as the first pianist to record the complete works of Chopin, and for his elegant, refined style, which became more daring later in life. (18105)
