Rare Concert Program
A very rare concert program from the Russian pianist, who performed at St. James's Hall in London on April 23 [1891 or 1896]. Single-sheet program with a portrait of Sapellnikoff on the recto, and the program on the verso, which included works by Bach, Schumann, Schubert, Chopin, Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky and Liszt. The concert-goer has added a note at the foot showing that the encore was a Presto by Mendelssohn. Slightly unevenly trimmed at left; light toning and soiling; overall fine. 7.5 x 10.5 inches (19.5 x 26.5 cm).Born in Odessa, Sapellnikoff studied at the Odessa Conservatory and taught at the Moscow Conservatory. He toured with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in Germany, France, and England, making his debut with the Russian composer's Piano Concerto No. 1 in Hamburg in 1888 under Tchaikovsky's baton. He became a favorite at Philharmonic concerts, and created a furor in 1892 with his performance of Franz Liszt's E-flat Concerto, accepting a second engagement for the same season. In 1902 he delivered the first performance in England of Sergei Rachmaninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto. (18074)
