Autograph letter signed from the important Victorian novelist. Viesch, Valley of the Rhone, July 29, 1863; 1 p. Trollope writes: "My dear Chapman, I have ordered a man at Meyrenger in Berne to send to me, addressed to your care, a packet containing two stags carved in wood. £4 is to be paid to them. If they reach you safe will you take them in and pay the £4 for me. Yours always, Anthony Trollope. [P.S.] £4 altogether – not £4 each." Light toning and folding creases, trimmed at the edges and laid down on paper to an overall size of 5.5 x 7 inches (13.5 x 18 cm). Overall fine.Publisher Frederic Chapman was a partner in Chapman & Hall, which published the works of Charles Dickens, Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Anthony Trollope.
Stags feature in the heraldry of the Trollope baronets, whose coat-of-arms is three stags courant and whose crest has a stag at the head. Anthony Trollope was the grandson of Reverend Anthony Trollope, younger son of the fourth Baronet. Since the 14th Baronet, all baronets have been descended from Anthony Trollope. (18073)
