[Bach, J.S. (1685–1750)] Joachim, Joseph. (1831–1907)

Chaconne - Autograph Musical Quotation

Autograph musical quotation of Bach's monumental Chaconne, from the important violinist and Brahms collaborator. He has penned the first five measures of the movement on a postcard, signed below and dated December 10, 1902. Postcard stamped at the left and on the verso by the "Festival de la Caridad en Cadiz." Light toning; overall very fine. 5.5 x 3.5 inches (14.4 x 9.2 cm).

Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin (BWV 1001–1006) were completed in 1720 and first published in 1802 by Nikolaus Simrock in Bonn. However, the set was largely ignored for the better part of the nineteenth century. Joachim brought the sonatas and partitas to prominence by making them part of his concert repertoire, recording two movements from the cycle, and also preparing the first edition based on Bach's autograph, which was published in 1908 and is still widely used. The sonatas and partitas are now a central and much-loved work in the standard violin repertoire. (18072)
