Parker, Charlie. (1920–1955) & Drew, Kenny. (1928–1993) & Haynes, Roy. (b. 1925)

Group of Original Photographs of the Charlie Parker Quintet

Group of 8 original 1951 photographs of the Charlie Parker Quintet, captured in performance in by photographer James N. Seidelle (1925–2018). The ensemble included Charlie Parker on sax, Benny Harris on trumpet, Kenny Drew on piano, Ted Kotick on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. Fine. Each 8 x 10 inches (20.7 x 25.5 cm).

Based on the background and contemporary advertisements, we believe the present photographs were taken during the Charlie Parker Quintet's May 7–14, 1951 engagement at Lindsay's Sky Bar in Cleveland, OH. Shortly thereafter in June 1951, Parker would be apprehended for drug possession and have his cabaret card revoked. Considered one of the most influential jazz musicians ever, Parker helped develop Bebop as a reaction against the prevalent swing music of the period. His personal life was not as successful—plagued by troubles which included drugs and alcohol and suicide attempts.  (18026)
