Signed portrait of the American lyric tenor and composer who was one of the first African-American classical musicians to be recorded. He is shown in a photographic reproduction of a charcoal drawing by the artist Charles White, and has signed at the lower left, dating November 22, 1964. One slight corner crease and light edge wear at the head; overall fine. 8 x 10 inches (20.6 x 25.5 cm).

The artist Charles White was born into a poor African American family in Chicago, and began his artistic studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. From a young age, he was interested in leading African American figures such as W. E. B. DuBois, Booker T. Washington, and Roland Hayes, and went on to become known for his paintings, lithographs, and murals on African American subjects. He was an important figure in the movement known as the Chicago Black Renaissance. (17977)
