Joachim, Joseph. (1831–1907) [Holstein, Hedwig von. (1822–1897)]

Autograph Letter Signed

Autograph letter signed from the important violinist and Brahms collaborator to the Leipziger musician and philanthropist Hedwig von Holstein, regarding a younger violinist. Berlin, May 14, [n.y.]; 3 pp. Translated from the German: "Dear Frau von Holstein, It is always hard to leave a wish unfulfilled, which is so lovingly expressed! Yet I must [advise] [...] your young protegé, the concertmaster, not to turn down the position in Leipzig which he has been offered on my account. Through my responsibilities at the Musikschule I already have so much to do that it is almost impossible for me to take on more responsibility to young musicians. [...] So I think it is better for [him] to take the position in Leipzig, and I will hear him occasionally in Leipzig, where I can heartily receive one of your protegés, and my advice, when I know it, can be candidly given. [...] Joseph Joachim." Fine. 5.5 x 8.5 inches (14.1 x 21.8 cm). (17835)
