Large original photograph of the American poet and lecturer who wrote passionately on behalf of the "common man" and who earned national recognition in 1899, when his immensely popular poem of social protest "The Man With the Hoe" was published in the San Francisco Examiner. Photographed by E. Willard Spurr of Pasadena, with his stamp to the verso. Further stamps and notes on the verso indicate that this portrait was exhibited at the Golden Anniversary Convention of the Photographers' Association of America in 1930 and given a rating of 95/100! Overall fine. 16.25 x 18 inches (41.5 x 51 cm).

Ervin Willard Spurr was born in 1869 in New York and grew up in Iowa, where he established his reputation as a photographer, before moving his studio to Pasadena. He was noted for his technical accomplishments as a portrait photographer, and photographed subjects including Albert Einstein and many actors of the day. A collection of his photographs of Native American actors is held at the Library of Congress. (17822)
