Original photograph, ca. 1925, of a Native American actor in a feathered headdress. He is identified in pencil on the verso as Chief Luxosier, also known as Billie Harris. Photographed by Ervin Willard Spurr, with his stamp in the image at the lower left. One very small tear at the lower left corner; overall fine. 10.5 x 13.5 inches (26.9 x 34 cm).Ervin Willard Spurr was born in 1869 New York and grew up in Iowa, where he established his reputation as a photographer, before moving his studio to Pasadena. Among his subjects was Albert Einstein. A collection of his photographs of Native American actors is held at the Library of Congress. Among the actors he photographed was Chief Thunderbird, who acted in Westerns of the 1930's such as Custer's Last Stand and Annie Oakley. (17819)
